<description>Tandem directors Tim Hill and James Murray have completed the Master of Architecture by Research (Invitational Reflective Practice stream) at RMIT University by invitation of program director Leon van Schaik. Over the last three years Tim and James have been able to refine established significant directions in their work through reflection upon their achievements to date.

Research is an ongoing and integrated process in the Tandem office.

In 2009 Tandem collaborated with ARUP and OUTR (Office of Urban Transformations Research) on a research project for an eco resort on Lake Tai, the third largest freshwater lake in China.

Since 1997 Tandem directors have been directly involved with the evolution of BIM within the architecture profession. The Atrium structure at Federation Square, for which Tim Hill was project architect, is a successful example of integrated project delivery with the design team, engineers and fabricators all working with a central 3d shop model. James Murray led a team on the National Gallery of Victoria Australian Art, an award winning building that was also one of the earliest deployments of a BIM system across all disciplines.

These large scale technologies have been developed and customized in order that Tandem is able to utilize the benefits across all it's projects.

<description>Internationalism brings something to China and takes something away. The rich legacy of her unique traditions are being set aside for a new march towards economic fulfilment.

The delirious passage of China’s progress requires new architectural expressions, accommodating extra large projects in a city of super human scale; to find amenity in a rapidly transforming metropolis.

Architecture is rooted immutably in local contexts: which are points of departure for new forms in the landscape of the city. Jade City is a dialogue between China’s future and her cultural legacy.

<description>The Museum of Old and New Art is a philanthropic venture and houses an extensive private collection of antiquities, sculpture, coins and modern art.

The estate is a significant historic site on the banks of the Derwent River in Hobart with strong connections to the local arts community, aboriginal heritage and popular culture. More a landscape than a building, the new museum preserves the visual prominence of Roy Grounds’ buildings on the promontory, while creating a clear point of entry from the water.

Tandem were engaged by Nonda Katsilidis from FK Architects for the schematic design and planning submission stages of the projects drawing on the experience of the directors of TANDEM in large scale cultural projects such as the NGVA at Federation Square.

<description>This project for a new aquarium for Geelong's waterfront is a chance to shift the city's economic and cultural identity from heavy industry towards a tourism that embraces environmental conservation, education and research.

Sited adjacent Geelong's re-invigorated urban waterfront, we imagined an iconographic building occupying Cunningham's pier: an aquarium both in the water and out of it; a research centre promoting awareness of local eco-systems; and a commercial hub capable of supporting visiting cruise ships, bus tours, and day trippers.

Pushing out into the bay, the pier is an open water experience, the experience of leaving land behind and entering the water.
