TANDEM Design Studio is a boutique and award-winning architectural studio located in the heart  of Melbourne’s CBD on Lt. Lonsdale Street. We have played a vital role in high-profile projects like Melbourne’s Federation Square and Hobart’s Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). Equally,  we’re currently working on cutting-edge projects in the education, build-to-rent, social housing  and commercial sectors.  

We have also designed private residences that respond to the particulars of clients’ sites and push sustainability and re-use of existing fabric – these projects are our testing grounds for new ideas and architectural approaches.  We believe in cross-pollination across projects and sectors and have a commitment to finding better ways to construct houses.

Job Description: 

A pivotal role exists for an Architectural Graduate or Architect within our studio to Lead our residential and small projects team.  Our residential project work consists of approximately 80% Private Residential and 20% Townhouses. Come join our Melbourne CBD studio surrounded by architects in the pursuit of outstanding design outcomes underpinned by social responsibility and the environment.

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Fee writing and negotiation with direction from Directors
    • Client engagement – reverse brief 
  • Site analysis including a strong understanding of planning codes – identifying key constraints and opportunities 
  • Consultant engagement and coordination 
  • Concept Design skills – working directly with Directors expected capabilities include: sketching, 3D mass modelling in Rhino or similar and physical model making 
  • Excellent presentation skills both visual and verbal – must be comfortable presenting designs to an audience
  • Interest in materials research and understanding of specification
  • Town Planning Report and Drawings preparation
  • Documentation including: detailing, scheduling, specification suitable for pricing and construction
  • Ideally advanced knowledge and experience of Autodesk Revit and related software & plugins
  • Working with emerging technologies: Point clouds / 3D Printing / VR Key 
  • Contract Administration – site work and responses to RFI’s

Selection Criteria: 

  • Architectural Graduate or Architect with at least 5 years’ experience post-graduation
    • Including a minimum of at least 3 years’ experience working on single residential projects from inception to completion
    • Interest and understanding of international and local residential precedents
    • Attention to detail and genuine interest in the nuances of each site and client
    • Strong desire for process improvement and innovation
    • Capacity to work both collaboratively and autonomously
    • Emotional intelligence required for team and client management.  Adept at exercising both empathy and assertiveness;  being hard on the problem and soft on the people

With an exciting and diverse selection of upcoming and active projects, we are on the lookout for  an experienced Architectural Graduate or Architect with at least three years of experience within the Private Residential sector. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively both within a team and autonomously. 

This is a unique role within our studio leading the residential team on multiple projects at various  stages of completion. The role will require managing a small team of students/recent graduates  and working closely with the Directors to deliver design excellence. 

The ideal individual will have a down-to-earth attitude and be eager to work collaboratively.  Strong experience in Revit documentation or working alongside Revit teams, with previous BIM  skills is highly prized. Construction knowledge will be highly regarded, as will exposure to  sustainable approaches both in architecture and the built environment. 

Most importantly, we are looking for someone who enjoys working in a close-knit yet diverse  design studio. Someone who believes in their ability to find solutions and bring value to the  projects and teams they are a part of.

Experience Needed:
5+ years of experience
3 years’ experience in Private Residential sector

Software Knowledge:
Rhino or similar conceptual modelling programme
Revit

Adobe Suite

Excell or Google Sheets

Word or Google Docs

Salary Expectation:
$70,000 – $90,000 + Super and commensurate with experience
